Targeting a slightly different focus and age group compared to the Environmental Stewardship for Young People (YESP: See component 3 -project 2), VERP is aiming at women, men, chief representatives, and church groups to increase their knowledge and advocacy skills in environment, conservation and sustainable development. The VERPs come with some background of knowledge, skills, and experience. Male and female, young and not so young, they are skilled communicators and have a friendly and helpful attitude. The VERPs work in their own villages, communities or in their suburbs and localities. VERPs are volunteers. They help all people to enjoy and care for their village compound. They assist groups to improve access to the countryside around their communities.
The conservation and enhancement of wildlife, habitats, landscape, and the cultural and historical heritage is a primary role of VERPs. VERPs are involved in monitoring, management planning and on-site work, often with volunteers. VERPs have a responsibility to lead the field in providing exciting and stimulating Programs in environmental education in their villages as well. This engenders in village people especially children and young people a respect, understanding, and caring attitude for their village environment.
Life in the Pacific is strongly influenced by its traditional culture and the religious faith based diversity. Of these, the Christian faith and its leaders have had the most influence on the society in terms of the socio political development. Given this background, cultural performances and religious activities are seen to be very effective means through which environment and sustainable development themes could be promoted in this region. The Won Smol Bag drama group in Vanuatu and a new project of IAS/USP are prime examples. While there are isolated attempts by the World Council of Churches and the Pacific conference of Churches to use Christian Programs and platforms for ESD promotion, a lot more needs to be done. The Anglican Church in the Pacific, and the Christian NGO groups are also keen to promote ESD through various mission activities.
