BAWANG MIAD -The Crying River: Storybook (No.1) produced through the "Moyog Family Literacy Project"

The Moyog Family Literacy Project is conducted in Togudon village, Upper Moyog in the district of Penampang, Sabah, Malaysia. The Project seeked to elevate the literacy capacity of rural families of Togudon village so that they would be more empowered to make documentation (such as writing stories) of aspects pertinent to a sustainable future, in particular, the documentation of culture and indigenous knowledge of forest conservation and sustainable use of forest, land and water resources.

The theme of KLF's Moyog Family Literacy Project is "One Family, One Story" and 11 storybooks for children are published.

Synopsis of the story
This story relates how a community must take care of its river as it is the source of clean water and habitat of all life in it. This awareness is communicated through a river clean-up campaign for a river called Palu.

One day Palu River noticed that a fish in her water was swimming away as if it was being chased. When she asked the fish what was the matter, she was told that it was running away as it cannot survive in her water anymore. One by one all the inhabitants of the Palu River fled for their lives.

The Palu River also noticed that the once green grass that grew at her banks had withered away. The grass told the river that they were dying because its water was toxic.

Palu River became so sad... the people used to love her but now they do not care about her and the environment anymore. Don't they know that they could get sick from drinking dirty water? Should they not be fined?

Fortunately, one day a young man from the village organized a River Clean-up Campaign among the villagers; awareness on the importance of a river was instilled in the community and the people started to take care of their river. Palu River became once again a very happy river.
