Adult Literacy Class in Lumbini
Literacy classes of level II were conducted in the community areas of the project sites. Total of 43 classes were conducted under the project while more than 150 classes of different levels based on learners were organized by the CLCs with the support of NRC-NFE and the Government. Based on the needs of the community, out-of-school chilredn program (OSP) classes for illiterate and school dropout children, women literacy and adult literacy of level I & II for illiterate and neo literate adults, literacy combined with vocational skills like vegetable farming and goat rearing for the group members etc. were organized. There are total of 205 classes including 43 classes under the project. Total number of beneficiaries is about more than 4,000 and female participation is found to be more than 70%.
For all the literacy progams operated under the project, the book "Vatawaraniya Sikchhya"
(Environmental Education) developed by NRC-NFE was used as supplementary book in
addition to the existing primer of literacy level II - "Jeebanko Batoma Sabaiko Lagi Shikchhya"
(Education for All in Path of Life). The books were provided to all the learners in those classes.
Similarly, the PLANET materials on Water, Forest and Waste Management as well as
maternal and child health related materials were also used as supplementary materials in the classes based on the needs and interest of the learners.

Because of literacy classes, the learners are now able to read, write and perform simple calculation. Along with this, there could be seen as the improvement in sanitation in the community. The learners became aware of their personal hygiene and cleanliness of households and surroundings. So, they are regularly organizing cleanliness campaigns in the community area.
They started using hand pumps for safe drinking water. They also took advantage of health service provided by the CLCs through free health camps. Similarly, they became aware of importance of family planning, vaccination, safe motherhood, environment protection, importance of saving & credit groups. The learners were influenced towards income generation for their quality of life improvement.
In order to enhance their skills for involving different income generating activities, the learners were provided skill training on different vocational areas according to their interests and resources availability. Before providing training to the learners, the facilitators and group leaders of the learners’groups were trained and the trained personnel had conducted training for the learner’s group at the community level. In Lumbini areas, trainings on goat rearing, fish farming, bee keeping were conducted while for Lalitpur areas, training on pickle making and candle making were conducted.
