● What is PLANET?

PLANET is a Package Learning Materials on Environment. It was designed and launched in 1997 by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) in collaboration with specialists in Non-formal Education, environment and animation in Asia and the Pacific region, and UNESCO. PLANET series has four titles of packages on different environmental issues: |
Its purpose is to develop environmental education materials for learners in non-formal and formal education to generate motivation for improving current environmental conditions for the future. It aims at raising environmental awareness and generating a sense of togetherness between nature and humankind throughout the world, thereby contributing to the promotion of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Its main characters are Mina and her family, who live in a village in Southeast Asia. The characters encounter various environmental problems in their village and work together to solve them. |

Video story : One evening, Mina's family gets food poisoning from eating polluted river fish. Before going to see a doctor, the family's health condition worsens. Mina, having learnt the causes of her family's illness, decides to improve the village environment with the cooperation of other villagers. |

Video story : While Mina's family is in the forest, fire breaks out. An environmentalist visits Mina's village and invites the villagers to the field to talk about the forest. Having realised the importance of the forest, Mina and the villagers decide to plant tress in the burned field. |

Video story : A baby goat Mina's family loves very much dies from eating a plastic bag left in the field. At the same time, some children in the village become ill due to improper waste treatment. These incidents lead the villagers to take action to improve waste management. |

Video story : While Jai is away in his parents' place, a big storm hits Mina's village. Mina and her family manage to weather the storm by evacuating to her neighbour Nora's house, but Jai's parents' village seems severaly damaged. When Mina and her friends reach the village to help out, it turns out that Zac, Nora's niece, is missing after the storm... After a few days, people in Mina's village start taking action to be better prepared for disasters. |

● Local Versions of PLANET
ACCU's in-country partner organisations localise the PLANET prototypes to suit respective local contexts. Not only the languages but also their formats, content, and illustrations are also modified, where necessary, to meet the needs of local people, culture and environment. In some countries, additional components are developed to enhance the effectiveness of the materials' usage. Many innovative ways of using PLANET local versions have been shared among the partner organisations.
● How to use PLANET
PLANET is most effectively used when all components are used together (video, booklet, poster .etc). As each material has a different educational purpose (motivational, participational, instructional and follow-up), the combination of the materials has a multiple effect. It is possible to use each component singly depending on the plan, situation and needs of the participants.
