PLANET Workshop - Dissemination and Utilisation
Once a teaching-learning material has been developed, the biggest challenge lies in how to effectively deliver and utilise the material. Many cases have been reported where materials are not distributed and utilised in an effective manner, for example, materials just remain securely stored in bookshelves in a library, materials are only there for the purpose of display, a large number of materials get concentrated in only a few communities in a large country, and so forth. It is true that sometimes geographical challenges prevent materials’ distribution, but even small innovative efforts can actually make a difference. The following are the relevant lessons learnt shared from PLANET country projects.
DISSEMINATION:
- Employ multi-sectoral approaches at different levels, going beyond the confines of the education sector for wider dissemination
- Different strokes for different folks: different approaches and strategies should be developed for different target groups even in the same community or area.
- Partnership, Participation and Public-private interaction
- Different materials (language, illustration) for different groups even within a country
- Distribute materials to Teacher Training Institutes and incorporate them into teacher training curriculum
- Involve religious and other social organisations
- PLANET as a “Package” can be a restraining factor. Each component has potential for different usages, and thus can target different groups.
- Develop more comprehensive strategies including monitoring and evaluation etc.
- Decentralise materials production and dissemination for lower cost of delivery as well as enhanced relevancy
- Do not forget to allocate budget for materials distribution
- Decide the number of copies based on a long-term perspective, beyond immediate targets
- Look for existing laws and policies which can provide a tailwind for materials wider distribution
UTILISATION:
Use PLANET with existing materials- Incorporate PLANET into existing programmes and/or curriculum
- Integrate with existing training programme
- Make most of mass media, such as Educational TV, for wider outreach
- Make electronic version of materials which are downloadable from the Internet
- Consider alternatives to VCD/VHS, such as a flipchart, when ICT equipment is not available
- Ensure that strategies and approaches employed are locally relevant
- Take a holistic view of the environment, examining other materials/topics available, such as integration of PLANET 1, 2 and 3
- Encourage communities, mass media and like-minded organisations to incorporate PLANET programme in their policies and activities
- Organize awareness raising campaign using PLANET activities
- Identify “champions” of PLANET activities as a hub of PLANET promotion
- Make sure to provide more training of local and grassroots facilitators/community members
