2) Brief Background – the importance of waste management
Population in Bangladesh has been growing fast over the last few decades, which creates a tremendous increase in the generation of waste. According to a study on waste, all the cities generate 17,000 tons of waste per day, and government agencies cannot provide satisfactory services alone, especially in the rural areas. As a result, uncollected or unused waste lies on roadsides, open drains, courtyards of houses which deteriorates quality of life and creates environment hazard in those areas. To minimize the harmful effects of waste, it is important to raise awareness / understanding and motivate all concerned.

3) Objectives
To implement 2 pilot projects in target areas on waste management; to raise awareness on proper waste management and basic knowledge/information on it; and to motivate people to use PLANET 3 and other collective actions for their areas. Also to enhance literacy skills of NFE learners involved in this project.

4) Target beneficials
People living in the target areas Narshingdi and Jessore. Especially, school-going and out of school young children aged 10 to 15 years are actors as well as beneficiaries of the project.

6) Monitoring
The area offices of DAM were responsible for supervision, monitoring and documentation of 2 pilot projects organized by CRCs & CLCs. Bangladesh Literacy Resource Centre (BLRC) will ensure quality of monitoring and evaluation.

7) Outcomes
Adaptation of PLANET 3 in Bengali language, including 2,000 copies of posters and booklets, 200 video/CD-ROM and 200 copies of guidebook. Through the pilot projects, inhabitants of the 2 pilot areas benefited from proper waste management. And the result of the projects helped DAM to disseminate this programme in other DAM working areas.
