2) Brief Background – Context of the localization of PLANET 3 by CEE
Centre for Environment Education (CEE) has been involved in several environment education projects, especially of solid waste. In addition to the development of new EE materials, CEE has developed expertise in adaptation and translation of existing materials, since the adapted material in the local language has been more effective. CEE is a Video Resource Centre (VRC) of the International Television Trust for the Environment (TVE), and has localized over 30 video programmes into nine local languages. CEE has also been closed involved with the development of the prototype PLANET 3 package.

3) Objectives
To localize PLANET 3 into Malayalam for the city of Kochi, in collaboration with Corporation of Kochi.

4) Target beneficiaries
Schools and residents of the city of Kochi.

5) Time frame
Aug – Oct 2004 Adaptation and development of draft materials in Malayalam
Nov 2004 – Jan 2005 Adaptation workshop at Kochi, comments incorporated in the development of the final material; production of localized material
Feb – June 2005 Identification of schools and community organizers; orientation
July – Nov 2005 Implementation of the school programmes
Dec 2005 Review Workshop at Kochi and final reporting

6) Monitoring
CEE visited the schools and the community areas where the project was being implemented. Wherever CEE felt that there was a need for further inputs the same would be provided at that point itself, so this exercise would be on a review and refresher model rather than only monitoring. At the end of the project, CEE organized a review workshop bringing together all the participants.

7) Outcomes
Immediate: to disseminate the material for the community organizers: they went out to the community with the material, so that several segments could benefit from NFE initiative. Long-term: to disseminate the material among other government and non-government agencies working for solid waste.

8) Partner Agencies
The main partner was Corporation of Kochi, which played a major role in facilitating the participation of schools and communities, as well as supporting as the decision making agency. The others would be some NGOs and youth groups, and design school at Bangalore.
