Country Projects (PLANET 3)

PLANET and ESD

Photo:Country Projects (PLANET 3)-1Since 1997, ACCU has mainly supported the production of local versions of PLANET 1 and 2 in Asia and the Pacific region with necessary adaptations of prototypes with respect to languages, content, formats, illustrations and/or layout presentation. As a result, PLANET 1 (water pollution) has been localised in 19 countries and PLANET 2 (forest conservation) in 21 countries. Over time, ACCU felt an increasing need to carefully monitor the dissemination and utilisation of the PLANET to ensure that the localised materials were fully reaching and serving the target learners towards the goals of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Hence, from PLANET 3 on waste management onwards, the production and utilisation scheme of PLANET in participating countries has been divided into two phases: Phase I: Local Version Production and Phase II: Dissemination and Utilization. This arrangement has enabled ACCU to work closer with partner organisations from the production to actual utilisation phases of the materials. Eight countries listed below have participated in the PLANET 3 country projects under the ESD framework. ACCU provided executing organisations with technical support during the project implementation by sharing knowledge and experience gained through the past PLANET-related activities.

Overall, these country projects of PLANET 3 served as good practices in developing, disseminating and utilising ESD materials. As part of feedback exercises, the outcome of the country projects was shared among the executing organizations of PLANET during the "Review and Sharing Workshop for the Effective Development of PLANET Programme" (3-6 October 2006, Tokyo, Japan). It is hoped that good practices and lessons learnt out of PLANET country projects will be shared and united with broader efforts of other like-minded organisations and individuals.
