Project
In view of the problems of environment and resources the rural social and economic development is facing, and to enhance the awareness of environment protection and resource saving in rural areas, 30 primary and secondary rural schools located in Beijing Municipality, Hunan Province and Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region will be chosen to carry out ESD. The objectives of the program are to enhance the awareness of the ESD vision for school principals, teachers and students, and to make contributions to local sustainable development. The main activities in the program are multi-disciplinary and integrate subject teaching with the vision of SD, to organize students to participate in social practice of SD. The expected outcomes of program implementation are that principals and teachers will be able to carry out ESD in schools; to create successful teaching cases integrated with the vision of SD; to create successful cases of local social practice with students' participation and to provide both experiences and lessons in carrying out ESD in rural schools, which would be learned to carry out ESD in rural schools in broad areas in future.

CPCESD is under direct guidance of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and its secretariat is housed in Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences (BAES). The mission of CPCESD is to advance the awareness and ability of educators and teachers in carrying out activities concerning ESD so that students would have the scientific knowledge and creative ability required for environment protection, resource saving and sustainable development in modern society. Between 1998 and 2005, CPCESD held 7 national training workshops on SD and 2 international symposiums on SD. About 1000 schools have been involved in carrying out programs on ESD. A wide network linking government departments, research institutions, universities and NGOs has been formed and research cooperation on ESD between CPCESD and research institutions and universities has been established. |
