Project Title

Capacity Building of Community-Based Disaster Risk Assessment and Mitigation on West Java Volcano Hazard

Project

Generally, West Java Province is gifted with fertile land, yet it is also very sensitive to changes. With relatively many volcanoes around the area, West Java Province is vulnerable to both tectonic and volcanic earthquakes and eruptions too. In the area, there are a number of volcanoes, seven of which are Class A Active Volcanoes.

A series of educational and training projects should be implemented, to decrease the impact of the volcanic hazard, with the objective of increasing awareness and response capacity and reducing the effect of the hazard on the most vulnerable people in the communities living in high disaster-prone areas. The main vision of the project is Education for Sustainable Development. The concerned community will be part of the resilient disaster community that incorporates the concept of sustainable development.

Profile

WALHI Jabar is an NGO that is concerned with environmental problems. Walhi Jabar was established in 1980, at the same time as the forming of Walhi at the national level. This organization was established based on the idea of involving other NGOs in action regarding environmental conditions in West Java.

WALHI Jabar wants to realize a civil society that has sovereignty in managing the natural resources and environments. To achieve that objective, WALHI Jabar carries out some environmental activities such as critical studies about policy, community organization, campaigning, information management, mass media publishing, collaboration network development, executive and legislative observation, enhancement of human resource capacity, environmental education, and dialogue facility among stakeholders.

WALHI Jabar is a means of struggle to achieve justice, generalization, community observation over natural resources management policy, clean and independent jurisdiction, and also good and clean government that is pushing continually for environmental management for the next generation.
