Project Title

Vocational Education Focusing on Facilities Maintenance Officers Training

Project

Emmaus High School is a private high school which focuses on training young boys to become self-sufficient, good citizens, respecting and contributing members of the community. The school realizes that not all students are college bound. This is because the school, though it had the reputation as one of the best in the country in terms of standard, has now become a home to problematic and trouble-prone students. These students are not the studious type. There is a need to provide opportunities for those students who plan to find jobs after graduation from high school. They need to be taught an alternative program to ensure their success in life. The proposed program offers multiple areas in which the student can find an interest to pursue or may pursue all components to ensure higher success.

The school has taken the initiative to re-awaken a program that used to be taught in this school. The area of vocational training, although it is being advocated in all aspects of education, has not been pursued but is rather being pushed aside by academics. Parents, educators and even the leaders of the country are putting more emphasis on academics due to the students' poor performances in colleges and universities in the areas of maths, science and English.

The main objective of this program is to equip students with needed skills for maintenance of facilities, small engines, appliances and so forth because they have become the common needs of the community.

Main activities for this project will be (a) to develop a curriculum guide for carpentry, masonry and small engine repair, (b) to teach students basic skills in carpentry, masonry, and small engine repair, (c) to have students do hand-on activities by doing minor repairs to school buildings, and by repairing lawnmower, green-machine and school equipment.

As a result of this program students will have valuable skills that enable them to find jobs after graduating from this school and to be part of our national workforce.

Emmaus High school is one of the private schools in Palau. Its mission is to train young people to become self-sufficient, good citizens, respecting and contributing members of the community. The school would like to start a program that would include vocational education in its curriculum. Students who are interested in vocational areas will be able to take training in carpentry, masonry, mechanics, engine repair and others. The school hopes that when students graduate from this school they will have some basic knowledge and skills in the vocational areas and academic background that will enable them to pursue their college education or to further their vocational training at Palau Community College.
