Objectives

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage's purpose is to ensure effective government involvement in the culture and heritage sector, in support of two broad objectives:

  • New Zealanders enjoy widespread access to quality culture and heritage experiences; and
  • Culture and heritage activities contribute to the achievement of other government outcomes.

Major Programmes on ICH

The Ministry's major activities include:
  • Policy advice to the government on arts, culture, cultural diplomacy, heritage and broadcasting issues, including legislation, major policy proposals, and developments and initiatives, which have significance to the arts, culture, cultural diplomacy, heritage and broadcasting sectors.
  • Advising Ministers on the performance of organisations funded by the Ministry, and working with the boards and management of these organisations on cultural issues. These organisations include, but are not limited to, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa), Creative New Zealand, New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand Historic Places Trust, New Zealand Music Industry Commission and the New Zealand Film Archive.
  • The protection and promotion of New Zealand’s heritage, by: regulating the trade and export of M?ori cultural objects and other protected objects; protecting symbols of national identity; maintaining war graves, historic graves and national monuments domestically and internationally; and acting as an agent for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
  • Enhancing access to and understanding of New Zealand’s history and cultural heritage by producing histories on state activity, war and other histories of national significance.
  • The production of two major reference works for New Zealanders:
    • Te Ara: the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, which can be found at www.teara.govt.nz; and
    • the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, which is in both print form as five volumes and a website (www.dnzb.govt.nz).
  • The production of NZ Live, an interactive website that aim connects people to a broad range of events and activities, including museum exhibitions, theatre performances, ballet, musicals, concerts, kapa haka, festivals, historic places and sports.
