Copyright Seminar and Workshop held
in Bangladesh (12 December)
| From 20 to 22 November, ACCU held National Seminar
and Workshop for Copyright Awareness and Production and Utilisation
of the Bengali Version of “Asian Copyright Handbook” jointly with
Copyright Office of Bangladesh, Academic and Creative Publishers’
Association of Bangladesh and Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan.
Eight speakers from Australia, India, Japan and Bangladesh provided
lectures to about 80 local participants including administrators,
publishers, writers, musicians, journalists, etc. In group work
sessions, around 60 selected participants discussed issues on copyright
and promotion of copyright awareness from various perspectives.
The Bengali version of the Handbook will be published in February. |

Information of the ICH Networks are
added in the Database on ICH (12 December)
In the “Training Course” section, ACCU’s two ICH
Networks; one is consisted of Japanese cooperating organisations, and
the other of National Correspondents from 17 countries, are introduced
with each organisation’s information. Information of the Training
Course to be held in January 2008 is also introduced.

available (12 December)
The PLANET photo gallery is now open on the Asia-Pacific
ESD website, introducing ESD learning activities using the local PLANET
materials. The photos will be updated from now on too. Please visit

ACCU Asia-Pacific ESD Photo Message
Contest “Letters to Tomorrow 2007” Extension of the Closing Date (12
December)
| ACCU has been organising the above-mentioned Contest
since September 2007. Due to the accident by carrier, some of our
important partners have not fully been informed of the Contest
in a timely manner. To keep the fairness on this regard, we have
decided to set new Closing Date to accept entries until Friday,
15 February 2008. We look forward to receiving entries, depicting
any aspects of culture, from everyday life and/or festivals such
as Christmas and New Year.

International Expert Meeting on Educational
Policies from a LLL Perspective in Promoting EFA held (9 November)
International Expert Meeting on Educational Policies
from a Lifelong Learning Perspective in Promoting EFA (Education for
All) was jointly organised by ACCU, National Institute for Educational
Policy Research of Japan (NIER) and UNESCO Bangkok from 9 to 12 October
2007 in Tokyo, Japan. Through active discussions, 27 experts in lifelong
learning from 13 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Fiji, India, Indonesia,
Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand,
Viet Nam) and UNESCO drafted a Policy Note with Recommendations for
Decision-Makers “Reformulating EFA Policy in a Framework of Lifelong
Learning”. The Policy Note will be finalised shortly and disseminated
to policy makers at different levels.

ACCU & ARI co-organised Community
Disaster Preparedness Workshop (9 November)
As an important step of PLANET 4 “Disaster Preparedness”
production, ACCU and Asian Rural Institute (ARI) co-organised “Natural
Disaster Preparedness Workshop at the Community Level” and had lively
discussion to ensure that PLANET 4 reflects everyday life in rural
villages as well as learners’ needs with 19 ARI participants from Africa,
Asia and the Pacific from 26 to 27 September 2007.

ACCU participation in ESD workshop
and LLL Conference in Mongolia (9 November)
ACCU took part in ESD Capacity Building Workshop
and National Conference on Non-formal Education to Promote Lifelong
Learning both organised by National Centre for Non Formal and Distance
Education, Mongolia from 11 to 16 September 2007. ACCU shared good
ESD practices and an overview of Lifelong Learning in the Asia-Pacific
Region for the betterment of further collaborative activities.

Exhibition of Prize-Winning
Works of the 15th Noma Concours (2006) (20 September)
| "Palette of Dream Colours III",
an exhibition of the prize-winning works of the 15th Noma
Concours, will be held at the International Library of
Children's Literature in Tokyo. About 70 of the prize-winning
illustrations will be exhibited together with around 150
children’s books from Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Arab
states and Latin America. Come and see for yourself!

September)
| ACCU is organising
ACCU Asia-Pacific ESD Photo Message Contest “Letters
to Tomorrow 2007”. Closing date of the entry is 5 January
2008. ACCU had been organising the ACCU Photo Contest
in Asia and the Pacific from 1976 to 2002. ACCU is
organising the contest and international traveling
exhibition in a new framework to contribute to the
United Nations Decade for ESD (Education for Sustainable
Development). The theme of the contest is “Celebration
of Our Living Culture”. We call for a photograph of
people who transmit living culture, together with a
text in your own words.

The Japanese Edition of
DVD "Mina Smiles" with 37 language tracks produced
(20 September)
| Following the production of "Mina
Smiles" Multilingual Special Edition with 37 Language
Tracks, its Japanese edition has been released. The guidebook
with lesson plans as well as the package are now availabe
in Japanese, suitable for education for international
understanding, foreign languages teaching, etc, and for
home use.

| “Animals
in Asian Tradition” Published (20 July)
“Animals in Asian Tradition-Intangible Cultural
Heritage around Us”, the latest publication from ACCU, introduces
performing arts, festive events and others in Asia that are expressed
through animals such as monkeys, snakes and elephants. With vivid
and colourful images, this 100-page, full colour book can be
enjoyed by children as well as adults and help them learn about
tradition and cultural heritage in the region. ACCU plans to
upload some of the pages on the Asia-Pacific Database on Intangible
Cultural Heritage so that it can be further used as reference
material.

works of the 15th Noma Concours released! (20 July)
The prize-winning works of the 15th Noma Concours
for Picture Book Illustrations have now been released on its website
together with information about the international jury meeting held
last December. With its attractive new design, you can enjoy the
world of fascinating original art works from Asia, Africa and Latin
America. Information on the exhibition in Tokyo, starting September,
is also available.

| Workshop
for Youth Participation for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural
Heritage and Community Development (5 July)
ACCU organised the “Workshop for Youth Participation
for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Community
Development” from 8 to 11 June 2007 in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata
Prefecture, Japan. Representatives of the seven awarded communities
of the Contest for Better Practices in Communities’ ICH Revitalization
were invited to the workshop from three countries, together
with a guest community from India. Each participating community
introduced their ICH, shared and discussed issues from their
community. A fieldwork was organised to appreciate Kurokawa-Noh
(Rosoku-Noh), one of the awarded communities in Tsuruoka City.

| Korean
Government Invites Japanese Teachers (5 July)
ACCU and Korean National Commission for UNESCO
co-organised an “Invitation Programme for Japanese Teachers
to Korea,” from 10 to 17 June 2007, in close cooperation with
the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
(MEXT) of Japan. The delegation was headed by Mr. Nakasone
Hirofumi, Member of the House of Councillors, and Mr. Sagara
Noriaki, President of Kyoto Notre Dame University. The members,
including 23 Japanese school teachers and other staff members
from MEXT and ACCU, visited Seoul, Daejeon, Cheongju, Gyeongju,
and Busan, and met with education officials, visited schools,
and interacted with local teachers and students. |

Symposium on ESD to be held in Tokyo (5 July)
As part of the 2006/07 ACCU Invitation Progrmame
for International Educational Exchange of Teachers and Professionals,
ACCU, together with the Japan Holistic Education Society (JHES),
is going to hold an international symposium on Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD) titled "Holistic Approach towards ESD".
Keynote speech will be delivered by Dr.Konai Thaman, Professor of
Pacific Education and UNESCO Chair in Teacher Education and Culture
at the University of the South Pacific (USP).

“Mina Smiles” with 37 language tracks produced (20 June)
National versions of the animated cartoon
“Mina Smiles” have been produced in 39 local languages in
30 countries following the original English version of “Mina
Smiles” produced for literacy promotion in 1993. This DVD
features 37 language tracks including English, Japanese, and
local languages in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. A guidebook
with lesson plans is also included in the package.

| “Tsunami
Rescue” published (20 June)
ACCU has published “- Inamura no Hi - Tsunami
Rescue” as the eighth in the AJP NFE material Best Practice
Series. It was developed based on the Japanese learning material
for disaster preparedness education produced by Wakayama Prefectural
Board of Education, and consists of the Story of Hamaguchi
Goryo who saved his village from a Tsunami at the end of the
Edo Period, basic information on earthquakes and tsunami,
and lessons for disaster preparedness.

Capacity Building Workshop for LRCs held (20 June)
2007 Joint Capacity Building Workshop for LRCs
(Literacy Resource Centres for Girls and Women) was organised by
ACCU, LRC Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad office, on 16-20 May 2007
in Lahore, Pakistan. 45 participants from Iran, Myanmar, Nepal,
Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand shared their experiences in literacy
and non-formal education activities and attended the training sessions
on materials development, training techniques and various approaches
to empowerment of adolescents and women.

Gov’t Invites Japanese Teachers (5 June)
ACCU and the Ministry of Education in China organised
an “Invitation Programme for Japanese Teachers to China,” from 20
to 27 May 2007, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. The delegation
consisting of 18 Japanese school teachers, two MEXT officials, and
two ACCU staff members visited Beijing, Hainan Province and Shanghai,
and met with education officials, visited schools, and interacted
with local teachers and students.

Best Practice “Tales of Hope” Published (21 May)
ACCU published “Tales of Hope – Grassroots
Activities of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
in Asia and the Pacific” as an ESD Best Practice material.
This publication aims to transform the broad concept of ESD
into concrete activities by building upon similar efforts
that have already been made. It is a compilation of the keynote
speeches, case presentations, and field visits conducted during
the ACCU-UNESCO Joint Regional Seminar for the Promotion of
Education for Sustainable Development (Tokyo, Japan, 23-25
February 2006), which was organised by ACCU and UNESCO Bangkok
Office.

The International Jury Meeting of the Contest
for Better Practices in Communities’ ICH Revitalization was organised
by ACCU on 24 February 2007 at Hotel Green Tower Makuhari in Chiba,
Japan. The International Jury consisting of 7 members including
a UNESCO representative selected six Better Practices and one Honourable
Mention. ACCU will organise the “Workshop for Youth Participation
for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Community
Development” (temporary title).

We are pleased to announce the opening of our
new website titled "Education for Sustainable Development -Asia
and the Pacific-" featuring regional efforts in ESD including
the COE Programme and Innovation Programme for ESD supported by
the UNESCO/Japan Funds-in-Trust. ACCU's Package Learning Materials
on Environment (PLANET) and ESD/Disaster Reduction Education will
also be featured on this website soon.

Invited about 160 Korean Teachers to Japan (20 Feb)
In cooperation with the MEXT, Japan, the Korean
National Commission for UNESCO, and the Ministry of Education and
Human Resources Development of the Republic of Korea, ACCU conducted
the seventh “Invitation Programme for Korean Teachers,” from 23
January to 5 February. The number of the invited teachers was increased
from 100 to 160 this time, to enhance the interaction between the
two countries. Between preliminary programmes in Tokyo and Osaka,
the participants were divided into 5 groups and visited Hokkaido,
Takarazuka City (Hyogo), Saitama City (Saitama), and Nara and Kagoshima
Prefectures respectively. They deepened mutual understanding between
both countries, through visiting local schools, exchanging experiences
with teachers, interacting with students and pupils, as well as
experiencing home visit.

Teambuilding Workshop of the ACCU-UNESCO Asia-Pacific ESD Programme
(19 Jan)
Representatives of the Centre of Excellence (COE)
gathered in Bangkok, Thailand for two days to participate in the
COE Teambuilding Workshop (9-10 December 2006) organized by ACCU.
The objective of this workshop was to clearly define common goals
and mission of the “2006-2010 ACCU-UNESCO Asia-Pacific COE Programme
for ESD”, particularly by situating the programme in broader ESD
initiatives at the Asia-Pacific level. During the workshop, COE
representatives had the opportunity to visit a Thai village in Saraburi
Province and learned about how local people preserve cultural heritage
and lead sustainable livelihood such as by engaging in organic farming.

the 10th APEID International Conference organized by UNESCO in Bangkok,
Thailand from 6-8 December 2006, ACCU held a panel discussion titled
(19 Jan)
“Catalyst for ESD -an innovation in management
and implementation of Asia-Pacific ACCU-UNESCO Programme in ESD-based
modalities and spirit” supported by the UNESCO/Japan Funds-in-Trust
for the Promotion of Education for Sustainable Development. Followed
by ACCU presentation detailing the background information of the
ACCU-UNESCO Asia-Pacific ESD Programme, representatives from each
of the five COEs, namely Asia South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education
(ASPBAE), Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), Thailand Environment Institute
(TEI), TVE Asia Pacific (TVEAP) and the University of the South
Pacific (USP) spoke about their respective COE ventures and strategies
towards achieving ESD goals in Asia and the Pacific.

illustrator wins 15th Noma Concours(20 Dec)
International jury meeting of the 15th Noma Concours
for Picture Book Illustrations was held on 7 December 2006 in Tokyo
and the work by Mr. Pradyumna Kumar of India was selected as the
Grand Prize winner. The two Second Prizes went to Iranian and Malaysian
illustrators. 522 works from 47 countries competed for this year’s
concours, and 33 works including one Grand Prize, 2 Second Prizes,
10 Runners-up and 20 Encouragement Prizes were selected by 8 jury
members including those from Argentina, Japan and South Africa.
This is the first time that an Indian work has won the Grand Prize
in the Noma Concours.

than 400 works received for the 15th Noma Concours (20 Nov)
ACCU received more than 400 entries from illustrators
in Asia, Africa and Latin America for the 15th Noma Concours for
Picture Book Illustrations, thanks to the support of cooperating
bodies in the regions. The international jury meeting will take
place in early December and the results will be announced promptly
on the ACCU Noma Concours website.

| Monitoring
of the PLANET 3 project in Uzbekistan(20 Dec)
In cooperation with the National Commission of
Uzbekistan for UNESCO, ACCU monitored the activities using Package
Learning Materials on Environment (PLANET) 3 “Waste Management”
on 11-17 November in Uzbekistan. Having visited a kindergarten,
schools, Community Learning Centres and a teacher training institute
in various parts of Uzbekistan, and having participated in the Children’s
Forum on the Internet, it has become clear that PLANET 3 materials
contribute to people’s activities to improve environment taking
place in Uzbekistan, especially via proper waste management.

Youth Forum for Disaster Reduction Education held (20 Nov)
ACCU, Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education
and Inamura no Hi Council jointly organized ‘Asian Youth Forum for
Disaster Reduction Education’ from 1-2 November in Wakayama, Japan.
62 participants from Asian Countries; students from tsunami-affected
areas of six countries and those living in tsunami prone areas of
two countries, gathered and joined field visit to Hirogawa-cho,
cooperative painting sessions, Workshops etc. to share their experiences
and to learn from each other. Wakayama Declaration was adopted to
be sent out to the world.

Invited 135 Chinese Teachers to Japan(6 Nov)
In cooperation with the MEXT, Japan, and the
Ministry of Education of China, ACCU conducted the fifth “Invitation
Programme for Chinese Teachers,” from 18 to 31 October. The number
of the invited teachers was increased from 100 to 135 this time,
to enhance the interaction between the two countries. The participating
teachers were from 11 cities, provinces and autonomous districts.
Between preliminary programmes in Tokyo and Osaka, the participants
were divided into 5 groups and visited Kochi, Saitama and Gifu Prefectures,
and Yachimata City (Chiba) and Yanai City (Yamaguchi) respectively.
They visited local schools, exchanged experiences with teachers,
interacted with students/pupils, as well as experienced home visit.

| PLANET
Review and Sharing Workshop held (6 Nov)
ACCU, in cooperation with the Japanese National
Commission for UNESCO, organized the Review and Sharing Workshop
for the Effective Development of PLANET Programme from 3-6 October
2006 in Tokyo, Japan. The workshop provided a platform for sharing
experiences, innovative approaches and challenges faced during the
implementation of PLANET 3 “Waste Management” country projects,
with 35 participants from 8 Executive Organisations of the projects,
environment education NGO in the Pacific, experts in relevant fields
of specialization, UNESCO and UNEP representatives etc. Suggestions
for future improvement of PLANET programme were also discussed.

version of "Asia-Pacific Database on Intangible Cultural Heritage
(ICH)" uploaded (6 Nov)
ACCU has uploaded the Japanese version of "Asia-Pacific
Database on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)". Over 120 examples
of intangible cultural heritage, policies and organisations in respective
countries are introduced in Japanese (some reference material pages
are in English only).

Copyright Workshop held in Mongolia (13 Oct)
ACCU, the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO,
and Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia (IPOM) jointly held
National Workshop for Copyright Awareness and Production and Utilisation
of the Mongolian Version of “Asian Copyright Handbook” from 5 to
7 October in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In the programme, 5 speakers
from Australia, Japan and Mongolia provided lectures to about 60
local participants. In the latter half, group work sessions were
provided, giving around 40 selected participants the chance to discuss
promotion of copyright awareness from various perspectives. The
Mongolian version of the Handbook will be published in January 2006
as one of the outcomes of the Workshop.

Meeting of Experts on AJP was held (13 Oct)
2006 Meeting of Experts on Asia-Pacific Joint
Programme for Promotion of Non-formal Education Materials (AJP)
Meeting was organised by ACCU, from 4 to 7 July 2006 in Tokyo. The
meeting was attended by 15 participants, experts in the field of
NFE materials development and utilization/application from 9 countries
(including Japan) in Asia and the Pacific and a representative of
UNESCO. The Meeting discussed new strategies for development and
utilization of AJP materials.

| Symposium
on Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
held in Tokyo (5 Sep)
ACCU and the Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan
(Bunkacho) jointly held a symposium on 23 August in Tokyo commemorating
the entry into force of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the
Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In the programme, Mr. MATSUURA Koichiro, Director-General of UNESCO,
delivered a keynote address and Mr. SATO Kunio, Director-General
of ACCU, made a video presentation on the diversity of ICH around
the world. Then, issues regarding ICH such as problems of passing
down traditional performing arts were discussed by practitioners
of the three Masterpieces of Japan, Nohgaku, Bunraku and Kabuki.

| Symposium
on ICH Convention to be held in Tokyo (20 Jul)
ACCU and the Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan
(Bunkacho) are jointly organising a symposium commemorating the
entry into force of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage on 23 August in Tokyo, Japan. The programme include
a lecture by Mr. MATSUURA Koichiro, Director-General of UNESCO,
and a panel discussion participated by master-performers of Nohgaku,
Bunraku and Kabuki.

version of UNESCO's "Third Proclamation of Masterpieces" uploaded
(5 Jun)
ACCU produced and uploaded the Japanese version
of UNESCO's "Third Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity" website on ACCU's ICH Database.
A new Japanese site containing 43 masterpieces was added to the
already available 2001 and 2003 proclaimed masterpieces website
in the Japanese language.

| Seminar
on Copyright Protection in the Digital Environment held in Beijing
(20 Jun)
ACCU and National Copyright Administration of
the People's Republic of China jointly organised the "Seminar on
Copyright Protection in the Digital Environment" on 30 and 31 May
2006, in Beijing. About 60 participants, including local administrative
officials, publishers and lawyers, attended and shared information
on the latest issues concerning international scenes and the current
state of China given by UNESCO, WIPO and Japanese and Chinese experts.

Launching of the Indonesian version of the Asian Copyright Handbook
(20 Jun)
ACCU attended the Book Launching and Discussion
which was held by the Indonesian Book Publishers Association (IKAPI)
at the Udayana University in Bali, on 19 May, and gave a presentation
to some 250 students and local publishers about ACCU's copyright
programme. A copy of the Indonesian version of the Handbook was
distributed to each participant. On the following day, on the occasion
of the annual general assembly of the Asia-Pacific Publishers Association
(APPA), ACCU briefly shared the experience gained through its copyright
awareness programmes with publishers from 9 Asian countries.

Yayasan IDEP, an Indonesian NGO and ACCU's partner organisation,
is making efforts to run mobile clinic programmes which provide
the earthquake victims with food, shelter and basic medical supplies
in cooperation with local partners in Yogyakarta. Yayasan IDEP is
also making efforts to distribute the Family Aid Kit, which includes
basic household supplies for displaced people, a tarpaulin and ropes
to make a temporary shelter, utensils, a bucket and rope for drawing
water, vitamins, and IDEP's Emergency Response booklets.
Yayasan IDEP has been implementing a very effective Community Recovery
Programme in Aceh after the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake in 2004 which
triggered a series of Tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.

Monitoring
Two monitoring visits of Phase II Dissemination
and Utilization of the Package Learning Materials on Environment
(PLANET) 3 “Waste Management” were conducted in the Philippines
(from 11 to 18 December 2005) and in India (from 8 to 14 January
2006). ACCU team observed Utilization of the packaged materials
as a tool of community development in the Philippines and as part
of school activities in India was observed. Both good practices
and lessons learnt were obtained from the visits.

Meeting on Intangible Cultural Heritage was held in Bangkok
Sub-Regional Meeting on Intangible Cultural Heritage:
Safeguarding and Inventory-Making Methodology was jointly organised
by ACCU and ONCC (Office of National Culture Commission), Thailand
from 13 to 16 December 2005 in Bangkok. 42 Participants – government
representatives, researchers and practitioners - from 13 Asian countries
shared their actual experience in safeguarding intangible cultural
heritage and the methodologies they use.

The prize-winning illustrations of the 14th Noma
Concours for Picture Book Illustration are compiled in a book titled

Package Learning Materials on Environment (PLANET)
4 "Natural Disaster Preparedness" Production Meeting was organized
by ACCU, from 18-20 October 2005 in Tokyo. The participants from
India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Japan discussed the contents, sequences
and design of the packaged materials as well as the overall scheme
of the project, making full use of their respective fields of specialization.

the Literacy Resource Centre for Girls and Women (LRC) in Pakistan,

ACCU-APPEAL Joint Planning Meeting on Regional NFE Programmes in
Asia and the Pacific.
The 2005 ACCU-APPEAL Joint Planning Meeting on
Regional NFE Programmes in Asia and the Pacific was held in Tokyo
from 12 to 16 July 2005. Participants were 21 NFE officials from
19 countries, 9 representatives from various UNESCO offices, 5 members
of the UNLD (UN Literacy Decade Resource Team). The Meeting discussed
the Regional strategies for non-formal education in the Asia-Pacific,
activities of various organisations, future programmes of ACCU and
APPEAL, and future plan of action with regard to contribute to the
goals of EFA through UNLD, UNDESD and lifelong learning.

"Waste Management" published.
The third title of the Package Learning Materials
on Environment (PLANET3) has been published. PLANET aims to raise
environmental awareness and generate a sense of togetherness between
nature and humankind throughout the world thereby contributing to
the enhancement of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
PLANET consists of animation video, poster, and booklet. In addition
to the materials, this third title includes Facilitators' Guide
which explain the contents of each material and sampled lesson plans
using PLANET3.

which was published by ACCU in November 2004. ACCU sent 5 resource

ACCU organised Strategic Meeting on Literacy
Resource Centre for Girls and Women,in Tokyo, Japan from 22 to 25
February 2005 in cooperation with UNESCO and the Japanese National
Commission for UNESCO. The overall objectives of the Meeting are
to formulate the ACCU-LRC Network's mission and strategies and to
develop concrete actions in the areas of: (1)increasing awareness
and acceptance on hte role of LRCs at Asia-Pacific regional, national
and community levels; (2) improvong and strengthening operations
and performance of ACCU-LRC Network at Asia-Pacific regional level,
as well as LRCs at national level; and (3)enhansing partnerships
and responsibilities of EFA stakeholders at all levels. The participants
are LRC related members who are from over the 10 Countries in the
Asia-Pacific region.

was held.
On 16 February, the International Jury
Meeting was held and selected 33 prize-winning works from
among more than 400 entries from Asia-Pacific, Africa, Arab
states and Latin America.

Second Prizes:"God of Thunder" by Mr.Cen Long (China) and
"The Race" by Mr.Salah Eldin Ibrahim Adam (Sudan).

Teachers Invitation Programme held in Tokyo, Osaka and four prefectures
in January-February 2005.
In order to deepen understanding
of the education system and situation in Japan and to promote
exchange between Japan and Korea, ACCU invited 99 in-service
primary and secondary school teachers and other educational
personnel in Korea to Japan for 2 weeks from 19 January
to 1 February 2005, to attend plenary programmes in Tokyo
and Kansai area, and group programmes in Hokkaido, Fukushima,
Hyogo and Tottori Prefectures. Participants visited schools,
cultural and educational institutions, world heritage sites,
and enjoyed home visits. This was one of the "Japan-Korea
Friendship Year 2005" programme. |

Workshop on Inventory-making for Intangible Cultural Heritage Management
held.
The workshop was held from 6 to 11 December 2004,
with the participation of 14 cultural administrators/experts from
12 countries in Asia and the Pacific. The inventory-making efforts
in the Pacific countries and the Japanese case of 50-year-old cultural
property safeguarding system, among other cases, were shared. From
UNESCO, Mr. Cesar Moreno took part in it.The participants discussed
and sought possible effective approaches you can take in order to
make a national/local/community inventories on intangible heritage.

The massive tsunami caused by the very strong
earthquake off Sumatra in the morning of 26 December 2004 left many
Asian countries with a great loss of people and society.
Sri Lanka, alongside with Indonesia, is the hardest hit country

ACCU's partner organisation to run and manage the Literacy Resource
Centre for Girls and Women programme (LRC) in Sri Lanka, Sarvodaya

involved in relief efforts in all affected areas of Sri Lanka. Sarvodaya

survivors and is also working for the medium-term activities such
as trauma management, resettlement of victims, and provision of
