2000/03 Role of Literacy Education in Sustainable Development of Poor Rural Ethnic Groups CHINA

This paper provides the concept of poverty particularly in the context of rural poor and ethnic minority groups in mountainous provinces of China. It provides practical guidelines as to how the literacy and non-formal education programmes could be tapped and used for the betterment of community members.


1 Objectives The main Objectives of the project are:
To explore the ways and means for providing literacy and adult education for sustainable development of the poor and ethnic minorities;
To develop conducive, innovative and interesting learning environment and develop people's awareness of the significance of life-long learning; and
To carry out experiments on the essential contents of literacy programmes in the context of poor and ethnic minorities;

4 Process The local government authorities provide classrooms, pedagogic materials, teachers' salaries, and other essential equipment required from time to time. The project research group raises funds for organizing seminars and training workshops. It also coordinates all the activities undertaken by other sub-sectorral ministries for promoting development.
