2000/03 Development for Working Children Curriculum CAMBODIA

The project designed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is aimed at meeting the educational needs of working children and to provide second chance education to children who dropped out from the formal education system. The main thrust of the entire project is to develop a new curriculum for imparting knowledge and practical skills for improving the quality of life. The project document contains contents and a detailed implementation schedule for each major activity and its sub-activities.



1 Objectives The main Objectives of the project are:
To develop the non-formal primary education curriculum for working children and dropouts of primary schools; and
To provide guidelines for the training of personnel who would eventually be deployed to teach these children.

3 Input
Literacy primers for developing skills in reading, writing and numeracy.
Guides on health education programmes.
Support for income-generation skills programme.
Teaching guidelines for teachers.
4 Process The entire Process of learning is contained in a detailed organigram and starts from the following basic premises:
Availability of a qualified and trained teacher/facilitator and his/her readiness to teach;
Possibility of organizing self-directed learning;
Frequency of children attendance in the programme;
Identification of children for the programme - who they are, what are their contexts, situation, problems and needs;
What should be the aim of the new curriculum? What are the areas to be addressed by the new curriculum - what type of knowledge, attitudes and skills do the children need and should have after the completion of the programme; and
Selection of appropriate teaching methods.
5 Output
Improved education for marginalized children and better living conditions for children.
6 Strengths
The curriculum is flexible and non-sequential.
There is no rigid precondition for registration in the programme.
The programme is highly flexible - children can join and leave the programme at any time.
There are no age barriers.
The curriculum is designed to meet all kinds of diversified needs of children from various socio-economic backgrounds.
7 Weaknesses
Lack of awareness of the programme at provincial level.
NGOs and IOs are not fully and actively involved.
Limited resources for printing and distribution of materials to the participants.
Lack of expertise to design and reform successively the curriculum.
