The paper highlights briefly the Department of Non-Formal Education innovative efforts to provide vocational and technical education to people in rural areas. Within this project every attempt is made to encourage each community to use their local knowledge and experience to organize classroom teaching and practical sessions for students and communities to create a sense of self-help.



1 Objectives The main Objectives of the project are:
To train target groups using local wisdom; and
To improve the quality of life of the programme participants by adapting and implementing knowledge and experience gained during the implementation of the project.
2 Partners
Department of Non-Formal Education, Ministry of Education
3 Input
Deployment of local wisdom as part of the NFE Department's network of activities in promoting non-formal education.
Maximum utilization of local human resources to develop more human resources.
Field-based training in agricultural pursuits.
4 Process The NFE Department supervises the project and implements it. It is also responsible for policy formulation, analysis of problems and needs assessment. It lays down the targets and Objectives and is responsible for technical, human and financial resources. The Department organizes frequent meetings aimed at providing guidelines for data collection and analysis. Classes are organized during evenings where students are given an opportunity to discuss openly their accomplishments and experiences.
5 Output
Students with a strong recognition of day-to-day problems.
Awareness raising among students of the causes and problems faced by the community and its members.
Practical knowledge of techniques.
6 Strengths
Building among students a sense of moral and self-respect and self-dependency.
Free exchange and open criticism of the project and its related activities.
Spirit of working as a team.
Appreciation for nature and environment.
7 Weaknesses
Lack of transportation facilities for educational visits.
Substandard teaching materials.
Language barriers.
