Profile of PNG Trust Inc.
PNG Trust was formed in 1990 and registered in 1991 as a non-profit educational organisation under the Associations Incorporation Act. PNG Trust was formed by various NGOs, womens groups, youth groups and other Community Based Organisations (CBOs), that were working in the areas of literacy and awareness raising activities for the purposes of coordinating, and providing resources, and training to its members throughout the country.
PNG Trust has been vocal in addressing and providing alternative analyses to educational and other development issues. It now has a membership of over 20 different groups (which are now called partner NGOs) and has a secretariat in Port Moresby with branches in Milne Bay, Madang, Simbu and the Southern Highlands (outer provinces).
PNG Trust is a resource, training and facilitating
agency for all its member orgainsations and individuals throughout the country
as well as regionally and internationally. Formed in 1990, PNG Trust has led the
NGO movement in terms of providing critical literacy training, raising awareness
on issues on communities lives as well as providing an avenue for community groups
to access assistance provided by the government and non-government agencies.
Within PNG Trust the women and girls literacy and awareness needs are facilitated by "Trust Meri". Literally meaning "Women of PNG Trust", Trust Meri was established by a group of women from the member organisations (various well established provincial NGOs) and provincial Trust branches (established in provinces where PNG Trust did not find an established NGO partner organisation to work with). Many of the partner NGO organisations through whom PNG Trust began to work with were, in fact, very strong and well established provincial women's organisations, such as the East Sepik Council of Women (ESCOW), Goroka YWCA and PIHI MANUS (women's) Association.
