National Policies on Literacy/Non-formal Education in Latest Policy Document on Education
The goals of non-formal education and training aim to enhance the quality of life of the Maldivian people by providing self-developmental opportunities to those who have missed out on regular formal education, through strategically selected programmes of community and adult education, and to empower members of the community with the skills needed for productive employment and advancement. Making every Maldivian literate is also a government priority.

Current Literacy/Non-formal Education Objectives/Strategies
With only a few illiterates remaining, each year, one or two atolls are selected for special campaigning to eradicate illiteracy from those atolls. Since there are only a very few illiterates, organised classes cannot be conducted and hence "each one teaches one" principle is used.

Lessons Learned from Past Literacy Programmes and Activities

Even though some people are illiterate, they work and earn well. So they believe it is not necessary to spend their earning time on learning to read and write.
