- 504 Million Illiterates in Asia and the Pacific -
2007 figures estimated by UNESCO Institute for Statistics in September 2008

1. Adult Literacy Rates (15 and over) by gender in Asia-Pacific Countries, 2000-2006

Note: Ranked by female adult literacy rate in 2000-2006.

2. Adult Literacy Rates (15 and over) in Asia-Pacific countries, 1970 to 2000-2006

Note: Total fertility rate is the number of children that would be born per woman if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years and bear children at each age in accordance with prevailing age specific fertility rates.

4. As Mothers Learn to Read, More Children Survive
graph
Please refer to the list of country codes at the bottom of the page.
Note: Under-5 mortality rate is probability of dying between birth and exactly five years of age expressed per 1,000 live births.

5. As Female Literacy Rates Increase, More Girls are Enrolled in Primary Education
graph
Please refer to the list of country codes at the bottom of the page.
Note: Percentage of female pupils in primary education is female enrolment as percentage of total enrolment in primary education.

6. As Literacy Rates Climb, More Pupils are Reaching Grade 5
graph
Please refer to the list of country codes at the bottom of the page.
Note: Survival Rate to Grade 5 is percentage of pupils entering the first grade of primary school who eventually reach grade five.

7. Literate People Tend to Live Longer
graph
Please refer to the list of country codes at the bottom of the page.
Note: Life expectancy at birth is the number of years newborn children would live if subject to the mortality risks prevailing for the cross-section of population at the time of their births.

8. Higher Literacy Rates are Likely to Generate More Income
graph
Please refer to the list of country codes at the bottom of the page.
Note:
  1. Gross National Income (GNI) is the broadest measure of national income, measuring total value added from domestic and foreign sources claimed by residents. GNI comprises gross domestic product (GDP) plus net receipts of primary income from foreign sources.
  2. PPP Gross National Income (GNI) is GNI converted into international dollars using purchasing power parity (PPP) conversion factors. At the PPP rate, one international dollar has the same purchasing power over domestic GNI that the U.S. dollar has over U.S.GNI. PPP rates allow a standard comparison of real price levels between countries.
  3. PPP GNI per capita is PPP GNI, divided by midyear population.
