EFA - Education for All

ACCU's Education for All(EFA)

There are many people in the world who are not able to receive basic education such as "Reading, Writing and Numeracy (Literacy) skills". In response to this situation, the global Education for All (EFA) movement aims to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015.

Education for All (EFA)―to achieve this goal, UNESCO leads this global movement, working closely together with other international organisations, governments and civil societies. ACCU also continues to contribute to this effort.

In 2007, there were approximately 775 million illiterate people in the world, of whom two-thirds lived in the Asia-Pacific region and more than 60 percent were women. That means, one-fifth of adults (above 15), and a quarter of adult women (above 15) lack minimum literacy skills. To receive an education is a human right and an opportunity to improve one's life. Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty.

On the basis of its strong relationship with UNESCO, ACCU implements programmes for Materials DevelopmentPersonnel Training and Literacy Database, together with people of the Asia-Pacific countries, in order to realise EFA.

ACCU has been working with the Literacy Resource Centres for Girls and Women (LRC) to promote adult literacy and women's literacy and education through the effective distribution and dissemination of materials, and the new literacy programme for women, "SMILE Asia Project".
