Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

ACCU's Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

What is Education for Sustainable Development?

United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) was adopted at the UN general Assembly in 2002 and commenced in 2005, in response to the current situation which demands more awareness-raising and educational practice to achieve our common goal of "Sustainable Development".

ESD aims at transformation of social structure and individual lifestyles by establishing a set of values through quality education. ESD centres on the three pillars of society, environment and economics with culture as its underlying dimension. ESD emphasizes "values of respect" ? respect for others including future generations, for diversity and difference, and for environment and resources.

In this manner, ESD is a holistic concept beyond the frameworks of existing Environment Education and Development Education, with special emphasis on the qualitative aspects of education.
