Message from the Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of ABD
I warmly congratulate the editorial staff of ABD on the occasion of the 30th
anniversary of its founding. Published by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for
UNESCO (ACCU), the quarterly has provided and shared news and information on
publishing and book promotion in the region since 1969.
Over the three decades of its existence, ABD has established itself as a reliable source of information and a unique regional forum of exchange in the field of book development, a topic that has always been close to UNESCO's heart. More specifically, the magazine is the focal point of the network activities of UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Co-operative Programme in Reading Promotion and Book Development (APPREB), which is co-ordinated by the ACCU.
I firmly believe that cultural diversity and cultural exchange are inseparable notions. By sharing all that is best in book development across a vast region, your magazine holds high these ideals of UNESCO and plays an invaluable role in promoting reading as the gateway to the "knowledge society".
At a time when the publishing world is experiencing the impact of new technologies, an authoritative and resolutely modern source of information is more necessary than ever. UNESCO is proud to have accompanied this worthwhile endeavour ever since its inception. I assure you of the Organization's continued support in the years to come.
Director-General of UNESCO
