Cultural diversity is an essential aspect of human development and UNESCO has been promoting it as one of their mandates. According to the “UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity”, adopted in 2001, it is described as "common humanity heritage". UNESCO believes that acceptance and recognition of cultural diversity are conducive to dialogue, respect and mutual understanding among civilizations and cultures in the world.
In 2005, UNESCO’s Member States adopted the “Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions”, and it entered into force in 2007. The Convention provides a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity which is an indispensable asset for various issues including poverty and sustainable development.
ACCU has been working with UNESCO to promote respecting for and protect cultural diversity.
