The paper outlines a detailed methodology developed to teach a nonreader how to read and write Bengali phonemes. It clearly demonstrates the several reading and teaching methods that are required, in gradual succession of complexities and difficulties of the language, to be developed to teach Bengali to adult illiterates.


1 Objectives The paper lists the following as the major Objectives of the project:
To develop a phoneme-based method for Bengali speaking beginners;
To study the suitability of phoneme method;
To prepare materials using the phoneme method for teaching the beginners the techniques of reading and writing in nine hours; and
To prepare guidebooks for teachers and simple learning materials for beginners.

3 Input
Teaching-learning materials for Bengali Phoneme.
Trained teachers in Bengali language and supervisors.
4 Process
Creation of three types of awareness among the beginners and adult illiterates - (I) auditory; (ii) Segmenting; and (iii) Blending of words; and
Use of speech pattern in every language including Bengali.
5 Output
Increased number of functional literate youth and adults in Bengali language.
Better comprehension, segmentation and blending of words.
Establishment of four learning centres in Dhaka, Bogra, Rajshahi, and Jessore.
6 Strengths
Learning is more than the introduction to letter names.
Good reading materials corresponding to the needs of the beginners for developing mastery of alphabet code.
Development of primers on the basis of continuous research of the impact of the programme on the participants.
Periodic evaluation of the project and learners to suggest timely solutions to individual problems.
