The project evaluation report demonstrates the impact of the Girl Child Shield Programme implemented with the cooperation of UNICEF in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The project is aimed at preparing young girls for future leadership by teaching them a spirit of teamwork, increasing their knowledge and imparting in them a vision for the future. The programme relies primarily on games and play activities teaches them about health, education, communication and their rights and responsibilities as citizens.


1 Objectives The main objectives of the project are:
To increase the awareness of girl guides regarding the situation and special needs of girl child;
To provide information on the rights of children and the facilities available to them;
To create an enabling environment to bring about changes in the basic knowledge and actions of girls, their families, the school, and their neighbours; and
To overcome among girls the feeling of insecurity, inferiority and timidness and to increase their self-esteem and sense of self-respect and dignity.

UNICEF as sponsor of the programme.
3 Input
Communication kits for the use of guides and their adult peers.
Information booklets, pamphlets for parents, iodine test kits, motivational posters, special cards on child rights and child labour, video films and shoulder bags.
Number of badges and a shield as a system of incentives and reward.
4 Process
Collection of information on the situation of girl child issues for preparing guides.
Pre-testing of several modules and training of guides.
Creative methods of learning and communication such as child-to-child and child-to-family approaches.
Training to girl guides on participatory approaches in learning.
5 Output
Increased awareness to improve the status and special needs of the girl child.
Increased capacity to organize welfare programmes for girls based on modern concepts.
6 Strengths
The programme is based on systematic awards of badges, which promote a feeling of healthy competition among guides to achieve results.
UNICEF shield is awarded to a centre of excellence to demonstrate to other centres for enhancing their involvement and commitment for better results.
Direct inter-personal communication and active participation of all in the programme development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Good reading materials corresponding to the needs of girls for developing love for learning.
Development of primers on the basis of continuous research of the impact of the programme on the participants.
Periodic evaluation of the project and learners to suggest timely solutions to individual problems.
