(1) Planning Meeting on ACCU Regional Literacy Programmes in Asia and the Pacific

This annual planning meeting of ACCU's regional literacy programmes in the fields of material development, capacity building, networking and ICT application are comprehensively planned and evaluated by non-formal education (NFE) experts from 21 participating countries.

It aims to share and exchange views on how to contribute to realizing EFA (Education for All) in the region. In recent years, ACCU has worked in close collaboration with APPEAL (Asia-Pacific Programme for Education for All), UNESCO Bangkok Office, which led to the organization of ACCU-APPEAL Joint Planning Meeting on Regional NFE Programmes in Asia and the Pacific in 2001 and 2002. The participants of the 2001 Meeting adopted the "Tokyo Statement on Non-Formal Education" as a regional pledge to reaffirm the importance of NFE for achieving EFA.

(2) Literacy Resource Centres for Girls and Women (LRC)

What is an LRC?

The Literacy Resource Centre for Girls and Women (LRC) is a resource centre managed by a partner literacy organisation of ACCU for the promotion of literacy, especially for girls and women. The LRC is expected to act as a centre of technical resources in promoting literacy for people in need and those who work for NGOs, government agencies and other various organisations. In order for the LRCs to function effectively and truly be resourceful, creating networks at local, national, and regional levels is necessary. The basic activities of the LRC are:

(1) to collect/provide reference materials and information for other NGOs, field workers, government agencies, and international organisations;

(2) to develop innovative literacy materials and strategies; and

(3) to provide training opportunities for literacy workers in different ways.

Based on the above, each LRC has different functions and activities catering to local needs.

In co-operation with UNESCO and government agencies, ACCU designates a few leading literacy organisations each year as partners for the LRC programme. As of December 2002, 16 LRCs in 15 countries are actively promoting networks at local, national, and regional levels.
